The Great AI Debate: AI, Opportunity, Threat or Both

Artificial intelligence is developing at extraordinary speed, and its impact is already being felt across business, education, employment, technology and the creative industries.

For some, AI represents one of the greatest opportunities of our generation. For others, it raises serious questions around jobs, skills, creativity, copyright, regulation, ethics and the increasing role technology plays in our everyday lives.

Rather than hosting another event simply telling people how brilliant AI is, The AI Cyclops and Pink Mondo Media want to create space for a genuinely balanced conversation.

This live public debate will bring together speakers representing different industries, generations, experiences and viewpoints to explore both the opportunities and the concerns surrounding AI.

Topics Will Include

  • Will AI create more jobs than it replaces?
  • How should schools, colleges and universities respond to AI?
  • Does generative AI enhance human creativity or threaten it?
  • Who owns AI-generated content?
  • How much regulation does AI need?
  • What responsibilities do businesses have when adopting AI?
  • Are we preparing young people for an AI-enabled future?
  • Where should humans draw the line?
  • What will AI mean for Milton Keynes businesses and communities?

Most importantly, this will not simply be a conversation between people on a stage. The audience will be part of the debate.

Questions, opinions and different perspectives will be actively encouraged, giving people the opportunity to challenge the panel and contribute to the discussion.

Whether you use AI every day, have never used it at all, are excited by its potential or are deeply concerned about where it may lead, you are welcome to join the conversation.

Event Format

1:00pm–2:00pm: Arrival, Refreshments and Networking

An opportunity to meet fellow attendees, businesses, educators, students, creatives and members of the Milton Keynes technology community.

2:00pm–4:00pm: Live Public AI Debate

A moderated panel discussion exploring the opportunities, risks and major questions surrounding artificial intelligence, including dedicated audience participation and Q&A.

4:00pm–5:00pm: Networking, Conversations and Follow-up

An opportunity to continue the discussions raised during the debate, meet the speakers and connect with other attendees.

Who Is the Event For?

This event is deliberately designed for a broad audience. We would particularly welcome:

  • Business owners and leaders
  • Employees and professionals
  • Entrepreneurs and start-ups
  • Technology professionals
  • Educators and training providers
  • Students and young people
  • Creatives and content creators
  • Policymakers and community leaders
  • People already using AI
  • People who are concerned or sceptical about AI
  • Anyone interested in how artificial intelligence may affect their future

No technical or AI knowledge is required.

What Will Attendees Get From the Event?

Attendees will hear genuinely different perspectives on artificial intelligence rather than a single predetermined message.

They will have the opportunity to:

  • Hear from people working across different sectors
  • Better understand both the opportunities and risks associated with AI
  • Challenge assumptions surrounding artificial intelligence
  • Ask questions directly to the panel
  • Share their own experiences and concerns
  • Consider what AI could mean for their career, business, industry and family
  • Meet and network with members of the Milton Keynes business, technology, education and creative communities

Why Is This Event Relevant to MK Tech Week?

Artificial intelligence sits at the intersection of technology, innovation, business, education, creativity and the future workforce.

Our aim is to create an event that brings those communities together and gives them an opportunity to discuss not simply what AI can do, but what its rapid adoption means for people, organisations and society.

Holding the debate during MK Tech Week provides an opportunity to involve businesses, educators, technology professionals, creatives, students and the wider Milton Keynes community in one shared conversation.

We want attendees to leave having heard perspectives they may not normally encounter and having had the opportunity to contribute their own.

Student and Young People Involvement

The voice of young people is particularly important to this conversation. They are likely to enter a workplace and society where AI is embedded in everyday life in ways that previous generations have never experienced.

Working with SCIoT and Milton Keynes College Group presents an exciting opportunity to involve students in the event—either as audience members, contributors to the discussion or potentially as part of the wider debate.

Their perspective on education, employment, creativity, technology and the future will add an important dimension to the conversation.
